Free printable birthday tags to make your birthday gifts extra special! Unicorns and zebras!
Birthdays Here! Birthdays There! Birthdays Everywhere!
When it comes to birthdays, I try my best not to forget. It can be hard, though, and I am often putting a gift together last minute. That’s where these free printable birthday tags come in handy! I designed them to be super playful, fun and EASY! One features a whimsical unicorn and the other a party-ready zebra. The best part of these printable gift tags is they come in two formats!
- Easy Mode: Simply download and print the free gift tags, cut them out and they are ready to use! Easy peasy!
- Crafty Mode: Obviously, my favorite if time allows! Follow the tutorial below to learn how to embellish these gift tags to be extra special!
You can find the free printables available at the end of this post.
If going Easy Mode: print the gift tags on a sturdy cardstock. I like to use 110lb white paper. Cut out the tags, punch a hole at the top and you are all set! The tutorial for embellishing the gift tags is up next :)

- Free printables (located at the end of this post in blue)
- Cardstock – I like to use 110lb White Cardstock
- Hole Punch
- X-Acto knife and mat
- Tissue paper
- Scotch tape
- Gelly Roll Stardust Clear Pen
Step One: Print the gift tags onto cardstock. A fun way to embellish the unicorn gift tags is by adding some sparkle! Instead of using glitter, which can be super messy, I like to use a Gelly Roll Stardust Clear Pen. You just color on the sparkle with the pen and it adds some wonderful shimmer to the tag.
It was hard to get a great picture of the sparkle. It shows up much better in person. Below you can see the difference between one of my tags where I added sparkle (on the left) and the one without.
Step Two: To add an embellished mane, you will need to create a cut line where the mane should go. I used an X-Acto knife and mat and just cut a line following from the ear to the bottom of the card. The pink line in the picture below shows the line I cut.
Step Three: For the unicorn, I used bright and colorful pieces of tissue paper. First I cut my tissue paper into rectangle pieces that measured 1″ wide, and then I cut this stack into tiny little pieces. They measured about 1″ by 1/4″.
Step Four: Place a piece of Scotch tape, sticky side up, on your work surface. Lay the little tissue paper rectangles onto the piece of Scotch tape covering half of the tape. Mix up the colors however you wish.
Fold the tape over to sandwich the little pieces of tissue paper OR grab a new piece of tape and sandwich them that way.
Step Five: Slide the mane you just created into the cut line. You can trim the sides of the mane so it fits into the cut line. Tape the mane in place from the back of the tag. You can trim the mane or leave it as is!
Punch a hole and use some fun ribbon to attach it to your gift! You can do this same method with ribbon or yarn. I used a white iridescent ribbon one time (pictured below) and love the way it turned out!
The zebra mane can be created the exact same way or, if you are using all black tissue paper like I did below, you can simplify things. Fold a small piece of black tissue paper repeatedly until you have about four layers of tissue paper about 1″ long. Wrap a piece of Scotch tape around the end of it so the tissue paper is sandwiched. Then cut the free ends of the black tissue paper every 1/8″ – 1/4″ – making sure to not cut through the tape.
If you are in a hurry, use the Easy Mode tags, and if you have some time to embellish them, try using the Crafty Mode tags. Both versions turn out so cute and are a fun addition to any gift!
This rainbow wrapping paper came from Target – it’s so fun!!
I absolutely LOVE this wrapping paper with the half-circle print. It is called Norbit from The Gift Wrap Company. I like that I can make it work for a kid’s birthday or an adult depending on how I decorate the gift. The Gift Wrap Company is one of my favorite places to find wrapping papers. I wish I could buy them all, but until I make that happen, this is a good one to have!
