Appliqué Design eBook Materials and Supplies

Below are links to the supplies I used to create the appliqué designs in my series of Appliqué Pattern ebooks. All of the designs are made using the same basic materials listed below. Some of the designs are embellished with special items like buttons or twine and I’ve tried to include links to those as well. Many of these supplies can be found at your local craft store and in many cases may be less expensive than what I have linked to on Amazon. Hopefully the links are still helpful to see what the supplies are and then you can find what works best for you.

Crafting Cheerfully & Designing Cheerfully Applique eBook Series.

Basic Appliqué Supplies

INTERFACING: Using interfacing to create the appliqué designs is optional and a personal preference. It is helpful because it will hold your fabric in place while you stitch. This is especially important for designs that include several layers of fabric. One thing to be aware of is that the interfacing will make it more difficult to push your needle through the fabrics – even when using sewable interfacing.

If you choose to use interfacing, make sure it is sewable. I like to use HeatnBond Lite Sewable interfacing. I use HeatnBond UltraHold only when adding the backing since this does not require stitching and is very stiff.

FELT BACKING: Each design is created on a base of felt. The felt can be regular felt, wool felt or stiffened felt. I prefer to use stiffened felt as it gives each design a bit more stability – but any type will work!

FABRIC: Create these designs using fabric scraps, felt, or Charm Packs. Each project will note if it is Charm Pack-friendly – meaning all of the shapes that need to be cut are under 5” square. Choose fabrics that coordinate well together but don’t be afraid to mix and match prints. Look for stripes, polka dots, solids, plaids and florals.

EMBROIDERY NEEDLE & FLOSS: Embroidery floss is made up of 6 single strands of thread. I like to separate the floss and thread my needle with 2 strands. I tie the floss in a knot at the end, so I am essentially stitching with 4 strands at a time. I used DMC floss.
