Vintage Red Truck Christmas Ornament – Felt and Fabric Appliqué
Hello Crafty Friends! Welcome to day #4 of my series “12 Days of Holiday Crafts”! Today I am sharing a vintage red truck ornament made from wool felt. It is such a fun ornament to create and sew. It makes a beautiful decoration for your tree or a fun gift for someone special.
This red truck ornament can be made using fabric or felt and is embellished with button wheels and a cute felt wreath on the door. The ornament is made using fusible interfacing and a simple running stitch that adds a sweet handmade look.
Choosing the Fabric
I love making appliqué shapes for different holidays and seasons that can be turned into ornaments, banners or used on wooden signs. This ornament can be made with fabric scraps or felt. The base of the ornament is stiffened felt which gives it a nice weight and structure.
This ornament uses wool felt from Benzie Design that I had leftover from my Sewing Advent Calendar. The different shades of red were perfect for this truck! I used Strawberry, Red and Crimson for the truck and Kelly for the tree. I used small bits of Kunin brand grey and green felt for the window and wreath.
This red truck ornament can also be created using fabric. I searched my stash for red and green fabric scraps and made several red trucks this way mixing up the fabrics. On the red truck below, I wrapped the evergreen tree with red and white Baker’s twine to look like it was just picked up from the tree farm!
The Details
Hand stitching and adding the sweet details to this red truck was so fun! The embroidery is simple and beginner friendly using only a running stitch and a few french knots. Large black buttons make cute wheels and I made a small wreath for the truck door using green felt and embroidered red french knots to look like berries. The top of the wreath is finished with a sweet red bow.
