Hello Crafty Friends! It’s the fifth day of my annual series “12 Days of Holiday Crafts” and I’m excited to share a new wreath with you. I used thick blanket yarn in two different shades of green to create a cozy braided yarn Christmas wreath perfect for the holiday season!

This wreath only takes a few supplies including yarn, a foam wreath, and red felt. The felt is used to create a stunning bow at the top of the wreath adding a festive pop of color. You can download my free bow template at the end of this post so you can create it too!

Cozy Braided Yarn Holiday Wreath

Supplies Needed

Two rolls of fuzzy blanket yarn in two shades of green.

Braid the Yarn

Step One: Start by braiding long ropes of yarn in both shades of green. These will get twisted around the wreath form to create a pretty pattern. For my braided ropes, I used six strands of yarn, two for each section. I tied all six in a knot and clipped the end to a heavy book to hold the knot in place while I braided. The braiding was a little frustrating at the beginning. As I braided, the ends of the yarn would get tangled. It definitely got easier as I went so stick with it if you’re having trouble.

You will need ropes that are roughly 200-220″ long, but it will depend on how tightly you wrap the ropes around the foam wreath form. My first ropes were too short, so I had to make a second rope of each color and connect them on the back side of the wreath. It would have been nice to have one long rope, but it may have been too hard for me to braid that long of a rope at one time.

Wrap the Wreath

Step Two: Wrap the braided yarn ropes around the foam wreath. Secure two ends of the yarn ropes to the foam wreath, side by side. I used straight pins and stuck them through the yarn and into the foam wreath form.

Two strands of green, braided yarn are secured to the outer edge of a foam wreath.

Wrap the braided ropes around the wreath, alternating the colors side by side, until the wreath is completely covered. If you do need to connect yarn ropes together, make sure to do that on the “back” side of the wreath. I used pins and a bit of hot glue for this. When you completely cover the wreath, cut the braided ropes so the ends can be hidden on the back with pins, hot glue, or a combination of both!

Add a loop of yarn to the top of the wreath so it can be hung once finished.

Create a Felt Red Bow

Step Three: Add a large felt bow to the top of the wreath! Once the wreath is wrapped with yarn, it is time to add a bow to the top. I chose to make my bow out of felt to keep with the soft, cozy theme of the yarn.

Download and print the free template, then cut out the pattern pieces. Trace them onto red felt and cut the pieces out.

Six pieces of red felt for making the red bow.

Gently fold each of the felt loops and pin the ends together.

The four bow loops are gently folded and the tips are pinned.

Stitch two loops together using red thread. These two loops will make up one side of the bow.

Two red felt loops are gently folded and sewn together at the tips.

Attach the other two bow loops. There will be two loops on each side of the bow, four bow loops total. The ends will overlap each other at the center.

The folded loops of red felt are sewn to the other loops of red felt.

Wrap the small piece of felt around the center of the bow, stitching it into place on the back of the bow.

A thin piece of red felt is wrapped around the center of the bow.

Attach the hanging ribbons to the back of the bow, then glue the entire bow to the top of the wreath.

The finished bow, with two long bow straps is attached to the braided yarn wreath.

The wreath is finished!
