Christmas Tree Farm Sign with Fabric Appliqué
Create a rustic Christmas Tree Farm sign using vinyl and your Cricut cutting machine. Decorate the sign with a fabric appliqué red truck for a fun, dimensional mix of materials.
Hello Crafty Friends! It’s the perfect time of year for holiday decor and today I’m excited to share a new DIY Christmas sign with you today. I created this fun Christmas tree farm sign using vinyl and my Cricut Explore. The sign also features one of my red truck ornaments. I love using fabric on my wooden signs. It’s such a fun mix of textures and it adds a nice dimensional element to the sign.
In this tutorial, I will show you how to create the sign. The pattern and instructions for making the red truck appliqué, are available in my shop. While I love the look of the fabric truck, you could also make this exact same sign using vinyl to add the red truck to the bottom of the sign. I created the design in Cricut Design Space and included a red truck so you have this option.
How to Make a Christmas Tree Farm Sign
Supplies Needed
- Wood sign (mine was 9″x11.5″)
- Cricut Design Space File for Text
- Transfer Tape
- Cricut Cutting Machine
- Cricut tools and standard cutting mat
- Red truck Appliqué OR use red, black, gray and light green vinyl to make the truck with your Cricut
- 1″ wide White grosgrain ribbon
Creating the Text from Vinyl
Start by creating the text you will cut from dark green vinyl. Use my Cricut Design Space file to get started. Measure your wooden sign and create a shape in Design Space to represent your sign. My sign measured 9″ x 11.5″ so I made a light gray rectangle with the same measurements.
Arrange the text and the red truck on the sign and resize them until you are happy with how the sign will look. I used the red truck as a place holder since I would be making my truck from fabric. You could however cut your truck from vinyl instead!
When you are happy with the design, use your machine to cut the design out. Be sure to hide the wooden sign before cutting, and the red truck if you are making it out fabric as I did.
Apply the Vinyl Text to the Sign
Weed the design and use Transfer Tape to apply the vinyl design to your wooden board. I like to use the Cricut XL scraper to help transfer the image.
Adding the Red Truck
I created an extra red truck while making ornaments using my red truck appliqué pattern. The truck is made by appliquéing fabric onto stiffened felt and then adding some sweet hand stitched details. The hand stitch for this pennant is a basic running stitch so it is a beginner friendly hand-sewing pattern. I used large black buttons for the wheels and added a cute wreath on the door of the truck.
Stretch the white ribbon across the bottom of the sign and glue it into place. Glue the red truck appliqué shape to the bottom of the sign so it looks as though it is driving along the white ribbon snow.
The sign is finished! I love the way it turned out and was excited to find a fun new use for my red truck appliqué shapes!
Finish your holiday decor off with a handmade fabric banner. My Christmas Tree Scrappy Banner coordinates with this sign and is a fun embroidery project!
You can also create a banner of red trucks leaving the tree farm with a holiday tree for the family!
