Layered Paper Snowflake Frame
Create a beautiful layered paper snowflake frame to display this holiday and winter season using my Cricut Design Space File. It takes just a few supplies to make a unique piece of decor that also makes a wonderful gift for someone special.
Hello Crafty Friends! It’s the seventh day of my annual series “12 Days of Holiday Crafts” and I’m excited to share a new layered paper snowflake frame! This frame is perfect for the holidays and the entire winter season.
Making layered paper frames is one of my favorite Cricut crafts. I’ve made a bunch of them including a Paw Print Frame, Holiday Ornament Frame, Pumpkin Frame and more! They are often mistaken for wood when they are really just paper. They only take a few supplies including cardstock and foam adhesive dots.
This snowflake frame can be displayed on the wall or on a wooden easel stand. I created my frame with four different colors of paper in different shades of blue, silver, and white.

Choosing the Paper
For my layered paper projects, I like to choose a sturdy cardstock that is also solid core. Solid core means the paper is the same color on the outside as it is on the inside. White core, or printed cardstock, is paper that is colored on just the front and back and the inside is white. I find with the intricate cuts, that solid core cardstock gives a more polished look and there is no white visible that may distract from the design.
I used mostly Bazzill Bling cardstock for this snowflake frame. Bazzill’s Bling cardstock line is a shimmery, 80lb cardstock. I thought the shimmery paper would be perfect for this glitzy snowflake. The sturdier cardstock will hold up better, especially if you display the snowflake in an easel. I recommend using a layer of chipboard on the back of the snowflake to give the frame even more structure and keep it from flopping over in an easel.
Supplies Needed
- Layered Paper Snowflake Frame – Cricut Design Space File
- Cardstock. I used Bazzill Bling and Bazzill Mono premium cardstock in:
- Sea Water – light blue (Bazzill mono)
- Diamond -white (Bazzill Bling)
- Glitz – medium blue (Bazzill Bling)
- Blind Date – silver (Bazzill Bling)
- Chipboard – I used Medium Weight 0.057 chipboard but my Explore was not able to cut all the way through it so I used a scissors to finish cutting it.
- Foam Adhesive Dots
- Cricut Cutting Machine
- Cricut standard mat
- Cricut tools
- Cricut Brayer
Preparing the File in Cricut Design Space
I designed this snowflake frame in Cricut Design Space using an image by Cricut Contributing Artist, Tatiana, of Studio 3D Elephant. My snowflake frame measures 9″ x 9″ with about a 3.25″ circular photo opening. You can resize the snowflake or change the colors of the layers. There is one optional layer included, a Chipboard Layer which you can choose to use or hide before cutting.
Once the file is ready, cut out all of the layers of paper using your machine. I cut the chipboard layer but my Cricut Explore was not able to cut all the way through the chipboard, even though I did run it through twice using a deep cut blade. To finish cutting it, I used a scissors to follow the outline of the circle and finish cutting it out.
Preparing the Back of the Snowflake Frame
If you are using chipboard, which I recommend if you will be displaying the frame in an easel or on a stand, attach the bottom light blue circular layer of cardstock to the chipboard using craft glue.
Cut a circular picture and adhere it to the third layer (white) using the score lines as a guide. I placed the top layer over my photo and traced inside the circular opening, then cut the picture out out and glued it to the white layer.
Layering the Paper Snowflake
Start with the top layer and add foam adhesive dots to the back of the layer. I like to add quite a few dots around the outer edges and fill in at the points where the paper intersects. Since the snowflake includes thin areas, I found it was best to cut the foam dots in half for the top two layers. It can be tricky getting the little dots out of the adhesive sheets, so I use my weeding tool to help remove the paper from each dot and also the dots themselves!
Once you have covered the back with adhesive, apply the top (silver/gray) layer to the middle (medium blue) layer.
Repeat for the next layer. Add adhesive dots to the back of the second layer (medium blue) and adhere it to the third layer (white layer). I find it best to add my dots in the same place from layer to layer.
Finally, adhere the third layer (white) to the bottom layer (light blue chip board).
The paper snowflake frame is finished! Display the frame in an easel as I did, or use ribbon and hang the snowflake on the wall. This sweet craft makes a fun and festive winter decoration and a wonderful gift for family and friends!
I hope you enjoyed this sweet snowflake frame! I hope you will continue to join me for the ninth year of my series “12 Days of Holiday Crafts“.
