LEGO Frame Ornaments
Create colorful and unique LEGO frame ornaments this holiday season! A great holiday activity for all ages!

Hello Crafty Friends! Wow, it’s already day eleven of my series “12 Days of Holiday Crafts”. Today I’m sharing one more ornament craft with you – LEGO frame ornaments. These ornaments are colorful, customizable, and are so much fun to make!
My family has been making Lego ornaments for a couple years now as a family activity on Christmas Eve. We’ve made the Gingerbread ornaments and the LEGO Santa ornaments, but we also wanted to try making our own. We dug through our pieces and were able to find what we needed to make these frame ornaments. If you don’t have a stash of LEGO, never fear – I’ve included a piece list below!
Here are a few of the designs we made. It can be really fun creating a pattern like on the ornament below. We looked for as many tiny red, green, and white pieces we could find and created a repeating pattern.

This cheese slope ornament was so much fun to make. We searched for cheese slopes and were surprised how many different colored pieces we had! We mixed and matched them and positioned them all so they were sloping towards the center of the ornament.

You can skip trying to make a pattern or design and just cover the top of the ornament with random pieces. After Christmas these pieces returned back to my daughter’s LEGO stash, but for Christmas they were happily decorating this fun ornament. I love the mix of random pieces that look so joyful together!

Where to Buy Lego Pieces
You can purchase LEGO pieces directly from LEGO.com or at local LEGO stores. I usually have a hard time getting every piece I need from these places but they are a great place to check.
I tend to have better luck purchasing my LEGO pieces from places like Bricklink or BrickOwl (and sometimes Ebay). These sites have third party sellers with huge collections that allow you to search for specific LEGO pieces. The trickiest part can be finding the pieces you need from one shop – which is preferred, since each seller charges shipping and sometimes has a minimum purchase requirement.
A great feature on Bricklink is the “Wanted List”. When you search for a piece, you will see the option for adding it to a Wanted List. I created a Wanted List called “Ornament” and added all the pieces I would need to make one single ornament (24 total pieces, 8 unique pieces).

After the list is created, you can click the “Easy Buy” option and Bricklink will search all of their sellers to find the cheapest way to purchase your list. When I tested this out, I found I could purchase all of the pieces from one shop. They had a $10 shop minimum so I switched my cart to purchase enough pieces for two ornaments, and then it came to $10.72. You may find different results when you check, but this would have been a great option if we didn’t have the pieces in our stash!

Assembling the Ornaments
Step One: Start by placing the four 2 x 1 bricks on each corner of the 8 x 8 square plate facing in the same direction. Fill in two sides of the plate with inverted slopes.

Step Two: Slide a picture on the top of the plate, the edges will slide under the inverted slopes. Pictures will fit best if they are cut to 1.75 x 1.75″. After the picture is in place, fill in the other two sides with the rest of the inverted slopes.

Step Three: Cover the top of the ornament using two 2×8 plates and two 2×4 plates.

Step Four: Create the hanging loop out of LEGO and attach it to the back of the frame. Start by layering the 2×3 plate on top of the 2×4 plate. Attach the two pinhole plates with the holes at the top. Use a bag tag ring to create the loop. This piece can be opened up, slide through the two pinholes, and then clasped shut creating the perfect hanging loop!

Decorating the LEGO Ornament
Step Five: Decorate the LEGO frames using small pieces like cheese slopes, printed tiles, LEGO DOTS, and more! Create fun patterns or just have fun mixing and matching the pieces. We searched our LEGO stash for pieces we could decorate with and had fun creating designs. You can also purchase small DOTS sets if you need tiny pieces.

These ornaments are a lot of fun to make and will add a bright pop of color to your holiday tree!

I hope you enjoyed these fun LEGO ornaments! If you love LEGO, be sure to check out some of my other crafts including my DIY LEGO DUPLO Table, LEGO Makerspace Board, and my LEGO Vinyl Storage Labels. I’ll be back tomorrow with the final day of my series, 12 Days of Holiday Crafts!
