12 Days of Holiday Crafts.Snowman vase filled with evergreen branches sitting on a wooden table.

It’s Day 3 of my 12 Days of Holiday Crafts series and today I’m sharing this cute DIY snowman vase! It’s made from two different vases with one sitting inside of the other. This cute snowman vase makes a lovely Christmas centerpiece or a fun decoration for the holiday season.

I had so much fun painting this vase using acrylic paint. I chose Christmas colors, red and green, but you could easily make this in silver and blues and have a fun wintery vase you could leave out all winter long!

Step By Step Tutorial

Step One: Create the hat brim.

Start by tracing the top of the terracotta flower pot on to a piece of chipboard.

A vase is turned upside down and is traced on chipboard.

Next, use a ruler to add 3/8″ to the inside of the traced circle and 1/2″ to the outside. In the second picture I traced my lines in color so you can clearly see the first traced line in green and the lines I added. If your vase is very thin, you may want to add a bit more to the inside of your traced circle.

The traced lines on the chipboard are colored purple, green and red.

Cut the brim following the red and purple lines.

The chipboard brim is set on top of vase.

Cover the brim in black felt. I used a black Sharpie marker to color the edges of my chipboard after coving it with black felt.

The chipboard brim lays on a piece of black felt.

Step Two: Paint the pot to look like a snowman.

Paint the terracotta pot white. I used my Patio Paint and gave the pot several coats of white. It probably could have use done more! Paint the top edge black.

The vase is painted white; the top of the vase is painted black.

Add a fun painted scarf to the bottom of the pot. The pot I was using had a fun curved section at the bottom – perfect for scarf. I used red and green paint and chose a paintbrush the width I wanted my stripes to be so I just made simple lines.

Red and green stripes are painted on the bottom of the vase to look like a scarf.

Draw the snowman face lightly in pencil, then go over it in paint.

Step Three: Create the top hat!

Paint the tall thin vase black and set it inside of the snowman pot. Set the chip board brim on top of the terra cotta pot. I did not attach mine but you could.

A black vase is set inside the white snowman vase; the black chipboard brim sits on top of the shorter pot.

Add a ribbon around the tall vase and glue a couple of cute flowers to the hat brim.

Fill the vase with festive flowers, a Poinsettia plant or evergreen branches as I did!

I made it so all three parts of this vase can be easily taken apart. This way, if I have flowers in the tall vase, I can bring it to the sink to fill it up with water without getting the felt brim wet.

I hope you enjoyed this fun holiday decor craft! I’m excited to fill it with a festive bouquet once they start being available at our local grocery store. :) I’ll be back tomorrow for Day Three!
