Colorful ice cream cone banner made from paper rosettes.

Hello Crafty Friends! With only one week of June left, it really feels like summer is in full swing around here! When I think of July, I think of swimming, playing at the park, sunny days and of course, ice cream. I love paper crafting, and you can’t go wrong with a fun paper banner – especially when it is ice cream-themed!

This banner is perfect for ice cream socials, summer soirees or cute decor you can leave up all summer. It was easy to make and any patterned or solid card stock can work. Create one in time for July which is National Ice Cream month. :)

Ice Cream Banner.

Making paper rosettes, or paper medallions, is one of my favorite paper crafts. They can be turned into so many different things. For this craft I created a paper rosette for each scoop of ice cream. The polka dot and zig-zag paper from Core’dinations came in sweet pastel colors perfect for summer.

I created a PDF pattern and have now added an SVG cut file so you can make this ice cream cone banner. Both are free to download by filling out the purple form at the end of this post. The SVG cut file includes the template to make the rosette, but you will still need to score it by hand using a scoring board.

How to Make a Summer Ice Cream Banner

Supplies Needed:

Assembly Instructions

Step One: First, use the free printable pattern to cut out the cones from the brown or tan paper.

Paper cones cut from tan patterned paper.

Step Two: Make a paper rosette for each ice cream cone scoop. Cut strips of paper that are 1.5″ wide by 11″ long from patterned paper. Score the strips of paper every 1/4″ using a scoring board. Accordion fold the paper along your scored lines then adhere the ends of the paper together using a glue stick or a tape runner to form a loop.

A yellow strip of patterned paper is scored every 1/4" on a scoring board.

A strip of yellow paper accordion-folded lays next to a scoring board and colorful sheets of patterned paper.

To finish creating the paper medallion, cut a small square of paper about 1″ x 1″. Place a little mound of hot glue in the center, then push the accordion folded loop down so the center of the rosette ends up in the hot glue. Hold it in place while the glue sets.

A hot glue gun lays next to two paper rosettes.

Top the medallion with a matching paper circle.

Step Three: Using hot glue or a glue stick, adhere the rosettes to the tops of the cones.

Step Four: Once the rosettes, or medallions, have been attached to the cones, add the cherries to the top!

Paper cherries are attached to the top of each paper ice cream cone.

Step Five: String the ice cones into a banner. There are several ways you can do this. I chose to cut a circle form cardstock, punch two holes in it and attach it to the back of the ice cream cones using foam tape. Tip: I initially punched my holes along the center line of the paper circle, but my ice cream cones tipped forward, so I found it worked best punching the holes closer to the top of the paper circle. You can see my two sets of holes in the pictures below.

Finally string yarn, twine, or ribbon through the punched holes.

The banner is complete!! :)

I love paper crafting! I like being able to complete a project in a short amount of time (especially since I usually only have time to craft during nap time), and I find I can usually paper craft quicker than I can complete a sewing project! A few of my paper projects have been featured over at AllFreePaperCrafts and I feel honored to be included along with so many other wonderful projects! If you are looking for inspiration, this site has tons of ideas!!
