Kids can create a sweet valentine with this Valentine’s Day lacing craft! Grab the free printable to help you get started!

Two heart valentines that have been laced with pink and purple yarn lay on a table with a ball of yarn and colored pencils.

Hello Crafty Friends! Today I’m excited to share these sweet lacing valentines with you – perfect for Valentine’s Day! These printable valentines are a great activity for littles ones, plus the best part – the activity is simple to set up and only takes a few supplies!

Lacing activities are terrific for littles ones because they help them focus on their fine motor skills while being also being creative and making something cute. They can practice hand-eye coordination and even counting as they figure out what hole to pull the yarn through. These valentine’s can also be colored and decorated, making them a really special keepsake!

Supplies Needed:

The supplies needed for the valentine craft are gathered on a table including the printable, hole punch, scissors and yarn.

Step by Step Tutorial

Step One: Start by cutting out the heart. You can do this ahead of time or let the child cut it out using kid-safe scissors.

The pink heart valentine is cut out with a scissors.

Step Two: Punch holes around the heart using a hole-punch. For little ones, I would go ahead and pre-punch the holes for them as this will keep them uniform and make sure the holes aren’t accidentally punched on the edge of the paper. For those kiddos ready for the challenge, they could try punching a hole on each black dot.

A hole punch is used to punch holes following the printed guide around the edges. The paper heart valentine with all of the holes around the edge punched.

Step Three: Cut a piece of yarn that measure 50″ long and wrap one end in clear tape. This will keep the end from fraying and make is easier for little ones to pass the yarn through the holes.

A piece of yarn is cut and the end is wrapped with clear tape.

Start at the center of the heart. Bring the yarn through one of the holes from the front side to the back side of the paper and then bringing it up in the hole next to it. Repeat this process around the entire heart! The reason we start with the yarn going down to the backside of the paper is we want to make sure the ends are on top of the valentine to tie into a bow at the end.

A piece of yarn is pulled through the first hole at the top left.

Multi-colored yarn is used to lace though the holes around the edges of the paper valentine.

Tie the ends of the yarn into a bow at the center of the heart.

Step Four: Decorate the heart valentine! Use markers, crayons, colored pencils and more to decorate the valentine. Don’t forget to write who the valentine is for and who it is from!

The valentines are complete! This cute craft is not only a great fine-motor activity but a cute keepsake kids can gift to someone special!
