DIY Pizza Valentine Box
Create a fun and silly pizza valentine box to collect and hold your valentines!
Hello crafty friends! Today I’m excited to share this fun pizza valentine box with you! Making valentine boxes is such a fun part of this Valentine’s Day. Each year my kids and I see such unique and creative boxes that we decided to get in on the valentine box action. This year we made a fun pizza-themed box!
To create our pizza box we used a red heart-shaped box from Target. Their boxes are a great size and come with the slot already cut out. We used paint to decorate the lid of our box to look like a yummy pizza! It was simple and very quick to paint, but since it takes several layers of paint, it is best to have a couple days to make it so you can let the layers dry in between. If you are trying to make this last-minute, I’d recommend using paper to decorate the lid, so you don’t have to wait for the paint to dry!
This box can also be made as a gift instead of a classroom valentine box. Use a heart-shaped box without a pre-cut slot in it. Add a cute tag that reads “You Have a Pizza My Heart” or “Any way you slice it, you’re the best!” to the box for a fun and sweet gift.
Below is the painting tutorial to make this cute box. If you’re looking for more fun Valentine’s Day crafts be sure to check out my Valentine’s Day Craft Page. Supplies Needed:
- Heart-shaped box – I found mine for $3 at Target with the slot already pre-cut. They have them each year but they tend to sell out quickly.
- Acrylic Paint – I used brown, white, yellow, red, green, black, gray and gold.
- Paint brushes
Painting the Pizza Box
Start by painting the pizza crust. Use gold and brown paint for the sides of the lid as well as a border around the top. I made my crust border about 1″ wide. My crust took two layers of paint to cover the red box.
The first layer I did in gold and let it dry. Since the red box has a bit of sheen to it, my first layer was really rough as far as coverage. But the second layer went on much thicker. I mixed in brown paint to give the crust an inconsistent and textured look.
Next it’s time to paint the cheese! Use white paint to paint a curvy organic shape for the cheese. Let it cover some of the crust but let the red of the box peek through in places to look like the pizza sauce. I kept my brush strokes messy and imperfect.
Once the white paint has dried, cover it with a thin layer of yellow paint.
Time for the toppings! Once the yellow paint has dried, use a pencil to outline different toppings in the cheese. You can make a pizza with your favorite toppings or make one like we did with easily recognizable toppings.
Our favorite pizza is cheese and pineapple and since that wouldn’t create the most interesting looking pizza, we opted to add classic toppings like pepperoni, green pepper, black olives and mushrooms. My kids were a little appalled by the mushrooms but it made us laugh. Our toppings added a lot of color to our pizza and were easy to draw and recognize!
Fill the toppings in with paint. For the mushrooms I painted them gray first, and then went over them with white paint.
The pizza box is finished! Once all of the toppings have dried, just pop the lid on to the box and it’s ready to go!
I hope you enjoyed this fun valentine box craft! We had a lot of fun making ours and the entire project made us laugh!
